SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (June 4, 2024) – The Albany Medical Center – Saratoga Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, a collaboration with Hudson Headwaters Health Network, has earned full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This recognition underscores the residency program’s commitment to excellence in training the next generation of family medicine physicians.

To receive ACGME accreditation, residency programs must demonstrate effective educational and clinical experiences, and implementation of current and best practices in the field. ACGME additionally sets standards to ensure residents cultivate a team-based learning environment and culture in which residents serve as both learners and mentors in delivering high-quality, equitable and patient-focused care.

“The ACGME accreditation reflects Saratoga Hospital’s and Hudson Headwaters’ leadership in medical education,” said Ephraim Back, M.D., founding director of the residency program and Hudson Headwaters’ chief of clinical initiatives. “We are particularly proud that this achievement shows our commitment to high quality and state-of-the-art postgraduate medical education, increasing our region’s primary care physician workforce, and expanding access to health care. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and residents, the program continues to evolve, setting a high bar for providing comprehensive and compassionate care to all patients.”

The residency program was established in 2023 and has filled all available residency positions in its first two years. The program will welcome the second class of residents in July. Residents see patients at several Saratoga Hospital locations, including the main campus, Saratoga Community Health Center, and Backstretch Clinic at the Saratoga Race Course, as well as at Hudson Headwaters Glens Falls Family Health and Ticonderoga Health Center. The program is designed to provide residents with excellent clinical training in both hospital and ambulatory medicine, with a special emphasis on behavioral health, addiction treatment, population and community health, rural health and state-of-the-art technology.
