Expanding Mobile Dental Program for Youth
Hudson Headwaters has expanded its school-based dental program to include the Family YMCA of the Glens Falls Area’s summer programs and to select Hudson Headwaters’ health centers beginning in late June. The program, which began earlier this year at Hudson Falls Intermediate School, brings a dental team and portable equipment to area schools. Youth ages 4 through 13 are eligible. The program focuses on prevention and education and its success has prompted the desire to expand.
Participants of the YMCA summer, gymnastics, and sports camps will have an opportunity to sign up. In addition, the campers at the Y’s new Adirondack Outreach Center located in Brant Lake, NY will also be eligible to participate.
“We are excited to have made this connection with Hudson Headwaters and look forward to the benefits our summer program participants will enjoy along with the convenience of having the access right here on site,” said Brian Bearor, CEO of the Glens Falls Family YMCA.
Participants receive a full oral health assessment and education on the importance of oral health. Treatments will include cleanings, fluoride and sealant applications. Parents/guardians of children in need of additional treatment, such as fillings and other restorative care, will be given referral choices for a local dentist. Hudson Headwaters’ dental center in Warrensburg is among the referral options.
“We are pleased to be expanding our program to the YMCA’s summer programs as well as some of our health centers,” noted Piperlea Chico, Mobile Oral Health Services Program Coordinator. “Expanding access provides more opportunity to extend treatments and education on the importance of dental care for youth throughout the region.”
Services at Hudson Headwaters health centers will be available as follows:
Queensbury Family Health: June 26th – June 30th and July 10th – July 14th
Warrensburg Health Center: July 17th – July 21st
Moreau Family Health: August 14th – August 18th
Fort Edward-Kingsbury Health Center: August 21st – August 25th
Schedules will be posted and updated on our website.
The program is funded by a $350,000 annual award to Hudson Headwaters from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration within Health and Human Services. Families are not charged for services. If a child has dental insurance, the insurance company will be billed for services, but no out-of-pocket costs to families will be billed (i.e. co-pays). Those who have no insurance will not be billed.
